Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor, written by Colson Whitehead, is a coming-of-age story that follows Benji Cooper, an African American teenager who struggles to fit in. The book cover design focuses on this idea of trying to find your identity and discover who you are by having two images, both profile and side profile, of the main character interwoven with one another. The cover creates this abstract visual of figuring out who you are by looking at yourself from different angles. The blue shades and tints symbolize the sky referenced throughout the book.

Orlando

Orlando, written by Virginia Woolf, shares the adventures of a poet who changes sex from a male to a female and ends up living for nearly 300 years. The part of the story that stood out was the transformation from male to female and waking up as a woman staring at herself in a full-length mirror. Even though Orlando has a new identity, he remains the same person.

The imagery conveys that despite having had two gender identities, Orlando's sense of self remains unchanged regardless of their sex. This is depicted through a mirroring reflection of Orlando's name. The torn paper resembles Orlando’s journey as a struggling poet and how at the end of the novel, Orlando grows as a writer and finds the missing words to his poem after his transformation and the long journey that he could not find before.
